The latest Hoka Challenger 7 is a bit of an overhaul. They used updated materials from the ground up to create a shoe that’s lighter and more durable than the previous iteration. Hoka also upped the stack height to 31 millimeters in the heel for a more cushioned ride and introduced a new CMEVA foam midsole.
For grip, the sole incorporates small 4-millimeter lugs spaced close together in the center of the outsole, with larger lugs around the edge, similar to the tread of a gravel tire.
Hoka dropped the ATR designation from the Challenger 7, but the new outsole rubber and tread are still made to run on roads and hard-packed trails. They have a 4-millimeter drop.
